General Introduction to Decorative Painting Effects 

People have been using wood object since the beginning of civilizations. Then they had started to paint and decorate the wood object with different ways. After the 17th century those techniques were being spread all over the world. The techniques used in painting and decorating wood objects were difference depending on the cultures. However, almost all cultures have used painted wood doors, money boxes, cupboards and furniture.

The followings are the most commonly used techniques in decorative painting. With these techniques you can also decorate metallic, glass and ceramic objects.

Basic materials required:

A wood object (box, tray, shelf, candle holder or any kind of decorative object)

Color acrylic paint

Undercoat paint acrylic

The color photocopy of picture or napkin for decoupage

Two kinds of varnish (acrylic & synthetic)

Decoupage and transfer glue

Dimensional paint (gold, silver or copper)

Finger gilt paint for metallic shining

Metallic paints (gold, silver or copper)

Brushes (min.three size of painting brush & water paint brushes no.0-6 & stencil

Brushes no.2-8 Stroke brushes min two different sizes)

Sanding paper



Special varak glue (for varak technique)

Varak paper (gold or silver)

Crackle medium 1 (for crackle technique)

Crackle varnish 2

Antiquing

Mosaic gel (For mosaic technique)

Stencil patterns (For stencil technique)


Compulsory preparation steps for all decorative painting techniques.

Step 1. Sanding: Before painting the object must be sand. It must be smooth, Check with your fingers all surface to be sure. After that wipe all surface with dry cloth or napkin.

Step 2. Painting with under coat: Use medium brush and paint on the same line with undercoat. Leave it 20 min. to dry. (Depends of temperature & humid it can take 20 – 40 min.)

Step 3. When it gets dry, sand it again till it will be smooth. Then wipe with dry cloth or napkin

Now the object is ready for any kind of decoration.



EFFECTS:
1. Paint with brush: Paint the object with main color. While it is wet , use the dry brush to get the contrast color (not to much), then with gentle touch color it on the same direction, until it gets antique looking.

2. Antiquing with candle: Paint the object with main color. When it gets dry get a white candle and spread all surface as you like. After that take contrast color with clean brush and paint the object. When it gets dry (approx... 20 min. later) sand the object with thin sanding paper gently, until it become antique looking.

3. Antiquing with cloth: Paint the object with main color. When it gets dry take the contrast antiquing color with clean brush and paint the object , get the wet cloth sweep the object until it become antique looking.

4. Antiquing with stretch: Paint the object with main color. When it gets dry take it gets dry (approx... 20 min. later) sand the object with thin sanding paper gently, until it become antique looking.

5. Antiquing with alcohol: Paint the object with main color. When it gets dry take the pure alcohol with cloth sweep the object until it become antique looking.

6. Effect with paper: Paint the object with main color. When it gets dry take the contrast antiquing color with clean brush and paint the object , While it is wet put the clean paper on the object press with your hand and squeeze it with your palm and take the paper off from object two colors pattern object is ready. .

7. Effect with nylon bag: Paint the object with main color. When it gets dry take the contrast antiquing color with clean brush and paint the object, While it is wet, put the clean thin nylon sheet on the object, press with your hand and squeeze it with your fingers. Take the nylon sheet off from the object, and two colors pattern object is ready. .


8. Effect with comb: Paint the object with main color. When it gets dry take the contrast color with clean brush and paint the object, While it is already wet get a comb and stretch the object with comb as you wish. The two colors pattern object is ready. .

9. Paper Dough: Take the tissues, cut them into small pieces. Put them in a bowl and mix with white wood glue . Put them any part of the object (on the part dimensional as you wish). Leave it for 12 hours. After that paint with acrylic paint and can be decorated with varak technique or metallic finger paint.
